Who are the Mystic Brewers?

Like a good grain mash, the history of the Inebriati is steeped in legend. Some say they drank while Nero fiddled; others say at Waterloo. Some claim they drank while the Goddess Nankasi roamed the fields. Some believe they drank in the Pharoah’s Tomb. Rumor has it they drank at the signing of the Twenty First Ammendment, but some say that’s just conjecture. If you’re looking for something resembling an official history, I suppose this will have to do.

The Mystic Brewers of the Inebriati is a home-brewing group in the Chicagoland area. A motley brew of programmers, artists, engineers, chemists, and beer enthusiasts, we had more than 20 beers under our belt by 2009 – all of them under different labels. Wanting to consolidate our efforts and take the next step, we forged this fellowship dedicated to the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of hoppiness. As such, the group was created by four Founders, all of whom came from the nefarious organization known as Hentai-Brau. Seeking a path beyond their anime niche and its gratuitous use of puns, the founders pledged to “go back to basics.” Hence the Inebriati’s motto, “Ad fundum domus bibere” – a double entendre meaning both, “Cheers” and “Back to basics” for “home beer.”

Like the alchemists of old, we strive to be well versed in our craft, yet never turn away from the forbidden fruits of extreme brewing. The weird, the exotic, the things that the so-called sane among us wouldn’t deign to call beer… these are our passion. Every month, we search for beers that make a mark and review them. We seek out new ingredients and flavor combinations for our recipes. We drink to our heroes – Anchor Steam and Dogfish Head, Three Floyds and their Dark Lord, Michael Jackson the Beer Hunter, the pioneering worshippers of Ninkasi, the monks and scribes and brewers young and old who made beer possible, and last but not least the entire country of Belgium.

Brewing occurs bi-monthly and alternates with bottling. New recipes are rotated with the old to ensure quality control. Everything we’ve discovered through this process will end up here at theinebriati.com

Currently, The Mystic Brewers are comprised of their own label (The Inebriati) and two other labels: Hentai-Brau and Fear Beer. Both are overseen by The Inebriati

The Inebriati’s first official beer is “Dead Tree Ale,” which will be opened at Three Floyd’s Brewery on Dark Lord Day 2009.

What Is Hentai-Brau?

It started as a joke on the way to the Chicago Belgian Ale Festival. Future Inebriati founders, James, Greg, and Rob were walking aimlessly towards Kendall College (apparently navigation is not one of Greg’s strong points). On the way, Greg noted that it was entirely possible to start home brewing. The only real sticking point was what to call themselves. As Anime fans, they figured they’d use an anime theme. James had long joked about starting a secret puppet master organization called Hentai Corp. When Greg asked “What sells,” and Rob said, “sex” – the answer became clear. "Hey! Hentai-Brau!" The rest is history. Originally sporting around a dozen members, Hentai-Brau still continues to operate, pumping out beers with anime themed labels and silly pun names like “Treegun” and “Perfect Blueberry” and “My Neighbor Cocoaro.” Always a joke from the onset, the label has little to do with real Hentai. With the formation of the Mystic Brewers, the Hentai-brau label has now been subsumed as a subsidiary of The Inebriati.

What Is Fear-Beer?

FEAR-BEER was founded by two members of Hentai-Brau and specializes in sci-fi and fantasy themed brews that almost always involved coffee. Some of their brews include “Fear Beer Coffee Stout” and “Mordor Imperial Stout.” They also brew soft drinks, including a Mojito Flavored Lime Soda. They are also a subsidiary of the Inebriati.
